Course Overview
Our brains are wired for stories. And when paired with data, stories have the power to transform findings into messages that resonate, inspire action, and support better decisions. So before writing another 20- or 50-page evaluation report, join us for this engaging course on data storytelling that is designed to help you communicate insights clearly, persuasively, and visually.
This course focuses on how to move from raw data to compelling visual narratives that are both analytically sound and audience focused. Along the way, participants will explore storytelling principles, presentation formats, and hands-on techniques to make their findings more accessible and impactful.
What You Will Learn
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Tailor messages to specific audiences and intended actions
- Apply storytelling techniques to organize and prioritize findings
- Design clear, focused visualizations (graphs, maps, etc.) that enhance understanding
- Choose the right communication format for different audiences and contexts
- Give and receive peer feedback on data story concepts and presentation
Course Format
The course is delivered in two virtual, instructor-led modules (or two half days in-person). Between sessions, participants will engage in individual work between modules/days and take part in a collaborative peer review session. In addition, all attendees who complete the course will receive a certificate of completion.
Module Breakdown
Module 1: Effective Data Storytelling
This first session introduces the core elements of powerful data storytelling. To start, participants will learn how to:
- Identify a single action or decision to guide the story
- View the data through the lens of their target audience
- Create concise, engaging graphs and maps that support key messages
- Break complex findings into smaller, digestible pieces
- Explore storytelling formats including slide decks, persuasive narratives, and infographics
The session draws on real-world lessons from effective storytelling in evaluation and research contexts.
Module 2: Crafting Your Story
Between sessions, participants will draft one or two simple data story sketches based on real evaluation findings or work in progress. These sketches do not need to be polished. Instead, they are intended to capture core ideas or approaches.
Then in Module 2, participants will take part in a collaborative “story swap meet,” where they share ideas, receive feedback from peers, and reflect on key takeaways from Module 1. The instructor will facilitate discussion and provide targeted guidance to help each participant refine their concept. As a result, by the end of the session, participants will have a data story that is directly relevant to their work and ready for further development.
Who Should Attend
This course is ideal for:
- Evaluators and researchers
- M&E professionals and program staff
- Communicators and data analysts
- Anyone who needs to present data in a meaningful, engaging way
Prerequisites
No prior experience with data visualization or design is required. Even so, participants are encouraged to come with a dataset, draft findings, or a current work product if they have one. All tools and materials will be provided during the course.
