Designing, Integrating, and Sharing Insights
Course Overview
Mixed methods inquiry brings together qualitative and quantitative approaches to offer a deeper understanding of complex questions. This course introduces evaluators and researchers to the foundations, design principles, and reporting strategies of mixed methods research and evaluation. Participants will explore how mixed methods can improve problem-solving, support diverse perspectives, and lead to more compelling and useful findings.
Through three interactive online modules, participants will examine the purposes and challenges of mixed methods, learn how to design mixed methods studies, and gain practical strategies for integrating and sharing data effectively.
What You Will Learn
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Define mixed methods and explain their historical and theoretical roots
- Understand the rationale for mixing methods and common challenges
- Design a mixed methods study, from question development to implementation
- Apply common mixed methods designs such as sequential, convergent, and nested
- Integrate qualitative and quantitative data during analysis and reporting
- Use effective approaches for disseminating findings from mixed methods studies
Course Format
The course includes three live, instructor-led online modules (or 1.5 days in-person). Each session is interactive and includes group work, discussion, and applied exercises. Participants who complete all three modules will receive a certificate of completion.
Module Breakdown
Module 1: History and Purposes of Mixed Methods
This session lays the foundation for understanding mixed methods research and evaluation. Participants will explore the origins and rationale behind mixing methods, as well as the benefits and challenges involved. Module 1 Objectives:
- Define mixed methods
- Understand the historical development of mixed methods
- Describe the purposes for mixing qualitative and quantitative approaches
- Explain common benefits and challenges
Module 2: Designing a Mixed Methods Study
This module focuses on how to design a mixed methods study once the purpose for mixing is clear. Participants will explore different mixed methods designs, including sequential, convergent, and nested. In small groups, they will practice developing mixed methods research questions and constructing a study design. Module 2 Objectives:
- Develop mixed methods research questions
- Learn components of core mixed methods designs
- Create a mixed methods study
- Evaluate mixed methods research
Module 3: Integrating Data in Mixed Methods Research and Disseminating Findings
Integration is at the heart of mixed methods. This module focuses on how qualitative and quantitative data interact, how to conduct integrated analysis, and how to share findings in ways that are both rigorous and engaging. Strategies for dissemination will emphasize storytelling, clarity, and respect for both traditions. Module 3 Objectives:
- Define integration
- Understand practices for combining qualitative and quantitative data
- Explore approaches for sharing results of a mixed methods study
Who Should Attend
This course is ideal for:
- Researchers and evaluators interested in using both qualitative and quantitative methods
- Program staff or analysts seeking to improve study design and data integration
- Professionals working on complex evaluations that require diverse perspectives
Prerequisites
No prior experience with mixed methods is required. All materials will be provided during the course.
